A cold January–it’s about time, I guess…

We are studying the solar system!  The kids are currently researching the planets and practicing a short play called Planet Parade that we will perform for the first graders.

In reading, we are about to start a 2 week study of Greek and Roman mythology to tie in with our solar system unit…  if you have any books at home, we’d love to borrow them.

Also, our next unit is simple machines.  I’d love for this unit to be as hands on as possible, but to do so, I need your help!  We need wood of all sizes, ramps, wheels, pulleys, nails, screws, and any other things lying around the house that the kids can build machines out of!  Hmmmm….paper towel tubes, pipes, string, spools, heavy paper, magnets, straws….  let your imagination go wild!  And thanks for any help!  :)

Holidays draw near!

We have four days of school left before the holiday break.

We finished up our bones, joints, and muscles unit today, so after the break we will study the solar system!  The kids are also learning about idioms–the English language is strange…. sometimes figuring it out is like finding a needle in a haystack!  Hahaha….uh-hem…

We will be having a “Winter celebration” on Thursday afternoon, and the kids have decided to do a Yankee Swap and bring in some goodies to share.

At a state meeting last week, we were told that there will be a lot more stress put on nonfiction reading and writing in the next few years, so encourage the kids to pick up some nonfiction from time to time! Kids magazines are great for this!

We’ve been getting crafty this holiday season—hopefully the ornaments are getting home in one piece!

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas Everyone!  Enjoy your families!

December has arrived!

The kids are writing poetry like crazy!  Four young men were published in the Addison Independent this week:  Avery, Oscar, Jarrett, and Edward.  Congratulations!  Also, four students from FCS were chosen by the Young Writers Project and those who work for the Winter Tales production at the Flynn Theater to have their poem read at a Winter Tales performance this week!  Those students are: Jessie, Oscar, Will, and a fifth grader, Shanon Cole. What a week!

On Friday, Dr. Kessler visited to talk to us about bones!  We looked at x-rays of cats, and we dissected a chicken donated by Shelburne Supermarket  to look at the bones.  Thank you, Denise!

Yarn Needed!

We need colorful yarn for a project this week.  Holiday colors especially, but anything really, as long as it is bright and happy!  Thanks for helping!

The kids have been experimenting with their bones!  Have them tell you what they’ve learned!

Have a great Thanksgiving break!

We have made our skeletons!  Some of the kids are bringing theirs home, and others want theirs hung up in the classroom…  They’ll be home later!

There is a picture of a skeleton in their homework folders with the Latin names of  the bones they need to know.

More Pics!

Week of Nov. 5:

Posted on November 8th, 2011 in Uncategorized by Ms. D.

Book orders are due Nov. 21!  This will be the last book order before the holidays!  Feel free to order off of the left column of the screen if you are ordering through Scholastic online.  There are tons of choices online that aren’t in the flyers that the kids brought home–stuff for toddlers too!  You can even search for a particular book that you are looking for.

Conferences will be held before and after school all week.   The kids are very welcome to attend!

Many of the kids need extra help with money and time skills.  Arcademic Skill Builders is a great site to practice.   There are also some games there that can be used for enrichment. There is a link to get to arcademicskillbuilders.com to the right.

Some kids also need to practice typing.  There is a link for that as well.

We will be starting a new science unit next week–bones, joints, and muscles!  If you have any x-rays kicking around, bring them in!

We are also starting new reading groups soon, and Wendy Beach has volunteered to come in to help us!  We will be reading Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Chalkbox kid, Shoeshine Girl, and the last one is undetermined.

Reminder:  We will be submitting poems to the Young Writers Project, which published in the Addison Independent on Thursdays!  Our first steps toward fame! :)
